Acne Cure is Condom Lubricant

November 28, 2008

A condom lubricant designed for sex workers and gay men has become a popular acne cure among female Cambodians, women in the capital and local media said Thursday.

Number One Plus, a water-based lubricant produced by health organisation Population Services International (PSI), is an excellent cure for acne, 29-year-old vendor Tep Kemyoeurn told AFP. “After I used it for three days, all of my acne dried up and went away,” she said. “Many people believe in it,” she added.

Khen Vanny, 29, from Phnom Penh, told AFP that women of all ages have taken to using the lubricant to get rid of spots. “It is very effective. Some people don’t believe in it, but people who do really get a good result,” she said, adding: “My youngest sister and my aunt use it too.”

Another woman told Khmer-language Kampuchea Thmey newspaper that she had used many kinds of medicine to treat acne, but none had worked. “After that my friends, who work at garment factories in Phnom Penh, advised me to apply the lubricant from Number One Plus condoms on my face every night,” she told the paper. “And just within three to four nights, the acne on my face gradually and then totally disappeared,” she added.

A vendor near a factory in the coastal city of Sihanoukville told the newspaper that she sold packets of Number One Plus lubricant for 500 riels (12 cents) to many women every day.

At times, side effects do have a beneficial effect. I am sure that researchers will be keen to follow up this discovery and market an affordable product that will finally rid sufferers from acne outbreaks.

Acanya Gel to Treat Acne

November 25, 2008

Redwood City, California. Arcutis Pharmaceuticals, a privately held specialty pharmaceutical organization focusing in medical dermatology, announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the new drug application (NDA) of Acanya Gel (clindamycin phosphate 1.2% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%) for the once-daily treatment of acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older.

Evaluated in clinical studies enrolling over 3,200 subjects with moderate to severe acne, Acanya Gel is the only FDA-approved fixed combination antibiotic and benzoyl peroxide medication for once daily treatment of both non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions of acne.

“We are very pleased to announce the FDA’s approval of Acanya Gel,” said Bhaskar Chaudhuri, president and chief executive officer of Arcutis Pharmaceuticals. “Formulated in an aqueous-based, alcohol-free gel, Acanya was optimized to provide enhanced bioavailability of benzoyl peroxide, creating an effective and well tolerated product for patients. In pivotal clinical trials, Acanya Gel demonstrated synergistic efficacy superior to the vehicle gel and either clindamycin or benzoyl peroxide alone, while demonstrating excellent tolerability and no reports of application site dryness,” said Dr Chaudhuri.

The following application site adverse reactions occurred in less than 0.2% of patients treated with Acanya Gel: application site pain (0.1%); application site exfoliation (0.1%); and application site irritation (0.1%). Acne vulgaris is a common skin disorder that affects about 85 percent of people at some point in their lives. In the past year, more than five million patients with acne in the US sought treatment from a physician, resulting in over 17 million prescriptions filled, according to data from Verispan and IMS. Acanya Gel is protected by two US patents and has pending patent applications.

Arcutis is a new medical dermatology-focused, specialty pharmaceutical organization created with the goal of developing improved prescription medications that patients love to use.

Researchers are constantly striving to produce improved medications that will effectively combat the symptoms of acne, without any unwanted side effects. Reaction tests that have been carried out on Acanya Gel have returned favorable results, so it may be used by those who are allergic to other topical medications.

The product has been passed by the FDA, and will surely be welcomed by the many millions of people, who suffer from the affects of acne.

Managing Your Skin Care Program

November 24, 2008

Nov 23, 2008 (Chicago Tribune – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX)
In tough economic times, looking your best is still important — maybe more than ever. Like it or not, studies show that attractive people earn more money and hold greater positions of power.

But when people are worried about keeping jobs and making mortgage payments, spending $120 for a few ounces of moisturizer is off the table.

So how can the average woman afford to keep up her beauty regimen? Dr. Debra Luftman and Dr. Eva Ritvo, authors of “The Beauty Prescription” (McGraw-Hill, $24.95), say most women need only three basic skin care products. They offered other tips for how women can pamper themselves — sometimes without spending a penny.

1. Out of the gate, you are at least 20 percent more beautiful than you think you are. Women tend to underestimate their beauty by 20 percent, Luftman says.

2. Many drugstore brands are as effective as department store brands, where you’re often paying for packaging, fragrance and so-called “elegant” formulations.

3. When it comes to skin care, keep it simple (KIS). Three or four daily skin care products — an exfoliative cleanser, a sunscreen and a therapeutic night cream — should do it. Need some suggestions? For cleansers, Luftman likes Cera Ve Cleanser, Aqua Glycolic Cleanser by Merz, Therapeutix Clarity Cleanser and Neutrogena Oil Free Acne Wash. For sunscreens, she suggests Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion, Dove Energy Glow Facial Brightening and Olay Complete Defense Daily Moisturizer. For night creams, she likes Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream, Neutrogena Healthy Skin Visibly Even Night Concentrate and Eucerin CoQ10 Anti-Wrinkle Cream.

4. Look in your kitchen for free beauty products. Green tea bags soaked and frozen make great eye depuffers. For youthful lips, mix granular sugar with cherry Jell-O and do a light scrub of your lips.

5. Exercise is free. Endorphins are released and your skin glows, muscle tone improves and attitude is enhanced. Source: Chicago Tribune

During tough economic times, one has to carefully budget, but that does not mean that proper skin care management should be neglected.

There are many natural products on hand around the home, in the pantry, laundry, or growing in the garden that can, with the proper application, help to keep the skin toned and healthy. Natural herbs and lotions are available and affordable.

Superior Skin Rejuvenation

November 20, 2008

New York, November 19, 2008 — Dr. Lisa Zdinak, oculoplastic surgeon and laser skin care specialist, is pleased to introduce the revolutionary SilkPeelTM DermalInfusion technology to her Manhattan clientele. SilkPeelTM is renowned as the most advanced exfoliation and rejuvenation treatment available today.

The unique diamond-tipped treatment heads set SilkPeelTM worlds apart from standard microdermabrasion procedures that rely upon abrasive particles that unevenly sandblast the skin. SilkPeelTM treatments go beyond simply exfoliating the skin surface. While the spinning medical grade diamonds polish the skin surface, customized vitamin solutions penetrate deeply into the skin to deliver their therapeutic effects: clarifying solutions heal acne-prone skin; hydrating solutions moisturize and soothe dry, flakey skin; brightening solutions lighten and fade dark spots and correct uneven skintones; and, antioxidant solutions bathe sun-damaged skin cells in nourishing vitamins and nutrients.

The solutions do not just sit on top of the skin like a traditional lotion or cream – instead the patented SilkPeelTM handpiece deeply delivers the vitamins, antioxidants and other therapeutic ingredients into the skin where they are most needed, the stratum corneum layer. Clinical studies have shown that SilkPeelTM provides even abrasion across the treatment area and rapid hydration deep to the underlying cells. SilkPeelTM DermalInfusionTM offers true skin rejuvenation with thorough exfoliation and targeted treatment to improve a host of skin conditions.

The procedure can be performed in a twenty minute office appointment with none of the residual “grittiness” of traditional microdermabrasion, making it a more pleasant and comfortable experience. The SilkPeelTM machine is the only device of its kind capable of running a disinfection cycle, making it the safest and most hygienic system on the market.

Anti Ageing Process Uses Newborn Foreskin Cells

November 18, 2008

By Leah Hardy
This treatment, called Vavelta, has been developed by the British biomedical company Intercytex. What is radical about it is that it seems to rejuvenate and restructure ageing and damaged skin from the inside by repopulating the lower layers of the skin with millions of healthy young skin cells. Unlike fillers and Botox, it is claimed to be permanent.

Vavelta is a clear liquid in which tiny skin cells, called fibroblasts, are suspended. These are derived from baby foreskins donated by mothers at a hospital in the U.S. after routine circumcision. The mothers and babies are screened before the foreskins, which would otherwise be discarded, are used. Once in Britain, they are divided into pieces less than a centimetre square and treated with enzymes to release the fibroblasts. These are grown in sterile conditions in labs.

Fibroblast cells are responsible for the repair and maintenance of youthful skin, pumping out collagen to create a line-free complexion. But as we age, they become dormant and many die. In trials, Vavelta appears to make skin smoother, thicker, more resilient and younger.

This procedure, although expensive, may be a god send for those whose faces are disfigured with acne or burn scars. According to Dr Robin Stones, the Court House Clinic Medical Director for the North of England, patients who have sun damaged skin, burns or scars seem to respond very well to Vavelta treatment. Caesarean scars may also be successfully treated by using this procedure.

The process is approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S., and is monitored by the Human Tissue Authority in Britain.

Acne is a common skin disorder that affects about three quarters of the population. Nearly everybody will suffer from an acne outbreak of some sort, at some time during their life time. It is extremely difficult to find a topical preparation that will discretely cover unsightly pimples, so that they become unnoticeable, without causing further harm to an already inflamed skin condition.

Many acne sufferers, who are reluctant to appear in public because of ugly blemishes on their face, will find comfort in this award winning beauty aid, and be able to mix socially or professionally once again, without feeling self conscious about their looks.
